With changing seasons and temperatures, small animals such as bats, squirrels, raccoons, and birds can be attracted to the warmth of your chimney as a place to seek shelter. Additionally, some birds love using the chimney as a place to build nests. That’s a problem for two reasons. First, nests and animal debris is the most common cause of blockages within the chimney. Second, if a spark ignites the nest, it can create a chimney fire.

At Elite Chimney and Masonry, we’ve been handling issues just like this since we opened in 2010. With more than two decades of industry experience, we first make it a point to remove the animal along with all the nesting and other obstructions, and ensure the chimney is completely cleaned and sanitized. To prevent the problem from occurring again, we’ll install a chimney cap, or screen assembly; both acting as a weather guard, an animal deterrent, and keeps stray embers from leaving the chimney. Properly sized covers are another good way to block unwanted intrusion, as are creen assemblies.
